A trade union is an association of workers in a particular industry, or company formed to achieve improvements in wages, benefits, working conditions, or social and political status through collective bargaining. The union trains and organizes company representatives to assist union members who have problems at work. Importance of trade unions to workers, is that the representatives provide support and advice and campaign for better terms and wages.
In addition, after consultations, negotiations, and collective bargaining, unions make numerous local agreements on issues affecting individual workplaces.
In workplaces where unions exist, union members benefit from the strength and security that comes from solving problems together. Trade unions can represent the interests of their members outside the workplace. For example, unions can lobby governments for measures to further their goals, this is one of the most importance of trade unions to workers.
The advantages of trade unions to employees are as follows;
Collective bargaining occurs when a group of people, such as employees of a company, come together to increase their bargaining power. For example, individual workers may believe that certain new safety measures should be implemented in their factories but may have limited authority to force the company to implement new measures. It has many advantages If the entire workforce recognizes the need for new measures and unites to pressure the company to implement them, the company is much more likely to comply.
Trade unions bring workers together, allowing individual workers to be heard and, in some cases, targeted by unions. Workers who are members of a union usually elect a representative to express their concerns to the union. Collective bargaining ensures that changes are negotiated and not enforced.
2. Higher wages
One of the main benefits of being unionized is that you get paid more than your non-unionized colleagues. Union members are also more likely to receive regular salary increases. In non-union workplaces, employers can set wages without formal negotiation or input from workers.
Another important benefit of working as a union member is that union representatives will work with you if you have a personal issue with your employer.
Trade unions are also important advocates for human rights and democracy. They represent members in the workplace, influence workplace rules, and protect from arbitrary disciplinary action or termination.
When individual workers are treated with dignity and respect. Whether workplace rules are perceived to be fair. When an employee raises a concern and it can be resolved fairly. When workers know they can share in the benefits of changing jobs. When workers have a say in working conditions, training, and health and safety issues, they are more likely to work collaboratively with management.
5. Equality and Fairness
Public sector union wages increases more or less parallel to private sector increases recently. Moreover, the overall wage dominance in the public sector is very modest, a product of higher wages for most women in low-wage jobs, and older workers in the predominantly male public sector. It is largely offset by lower wages than the private sector. Collective agreements reflect economic realities and the desire of unions to maintain good jobs for all members.
6. Job Security
Unionized jobs tend to have much lower turnover, giving employers the advantage of experienced workers and an incentive to invest in the skills of their employees. It is relatively easy to see how much of union wage advantage is offset by employer benefits.
7. Better Training
A union will provide members with further training opportunities to increase safety on site and ensure that injuries and potential safety hazards are avoided.
8. Health and Safety
Members are held to the highest standards of health and safety thus, ensuring that all members are protected and given the proper equipment and resources to avoid injury.
